And we didn't mention Pancake Day once!

KAYAK - BRAIN SURGERY
KAYAK - BRAIN SURGERY
There may be higher-budgeted, epic spots from bigger brands out this week, but this simple number from flight price-checking site Kayak tickled us to such an extent that it fully deserves the hallowed ‘Ad Of The Week’ accolade. Featuring a busy brain surgeon who uses his cranium-contorting skills for nefarious purposes, the spot’s well-crafted delivery and comedic performances mark it out as a smart 30-seconder.
REEL VERDICT – We lobe it
CENTRAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY - IT'S A SNAP!
CENTRAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY - IT'S A SNAP!
We can always tell if an ad or piece of content is truly viral by whether it gets sent to us by pals before the inevitable press release celebrating its ‘outreach’. Therefore it’s safe to say, judging by this branded short’s proliferation on our Facebook/Twitter timelines plus its 1million+ views on Facebook, it's a true ‘viral smash’. Created by YouTube icons Henry & Aaron, the film extols the virtues of the Central Institute of Technology’s facilities using a simple 'snap' technique which goes horribly, horribly wrong. If you’re not laughing and feeling a bit sick at the end I’m afraid we can’t be friends any more. Quite simply the greatest college recruitment film we’ve ever seen.
REEL VERDICT - Snaptastic
PHILIPS - MOMS’ TIPS FOR BABY SLEEP
PHILIPS - MOMS’ TIPS FOR BABY SLEEP
From what we hear, getting a little’un to the land of nod is quite a tricky procedure for parents, so to advertise Philips’ Avent baby range, the net-magicians at The Viral Factory have created a entrancing piece of content showcasing the wacky ways some babies need to be enticed to sleep. Aside from being almost uncontrollably adorable, the micro-doc amazed us with the Derren Brown powers some Mums possess over their offspring.
REEL VERDICT - Hypnotising
MTV - VALENTINE'S DAY CARD
MTV - VALENTINE'S DAY CARD
We know we’re a week late with this V-Day offering, but this ‘Creature Comforts’-esque animated short for MTV was too adorable not to share. Using an authentic interview as its base, the cartoon cutely illustrates a chap’s initial misconceptions about how babies are made. A charming heart-melter if ever we saw one.
REEL VERDICT – It’s bear cute
COST OF LIVING
COST OF LIVING
OK, so it may have star power (Superman Returns’ Brandon Routh), a high concept (security guards at a monster-making-facility) and Hollywood finishing, but this short caught our eye with its snappy pacing, sharp script and, most importantly, heart. Ostensibly the tale of two men who hate their job, the films fantastical setting merely sits as a backdrop to a wordy comedy-drama full of banter. Nicely focused and perfectly timed, this is a nifty blueprint for short scripts.
REEL VERDICT – Worth the price
