Welcome to Basketball BC's February 2012 newsletter!


Basketball BC is proud to release the second edition of its new monthly newsletter, FastBreak. This newsletter continues to provide information on Basketball BC's upcoming events, general announcements, youth programs, athlete development, and coaching resources. All of the information can also be found on Basketball BC's website at www.basketball.bc.ca


The Coaches Clipboard is an online coaching resource produced by Basketball BC. It features articles,video clips, training tips, and diagrams for coaches who work with all ages and levels of basketball players. Each article is supplemented with a video. Youth Development Coordination - Toss and Rebound

Youth coaches must constantly work to develop the athleticism of their players. During each practice, time should be spent at the beginning of the practice to help develop various athletic qualities and help their young players become the best athletes they can be.

Youth practices cannot be all basketball skills and drills because, though basketball is a great sport to help improve athleticism, there is simply not enough repetition to ensure that all necessary athletic capacities are touched.

The Toss and Rebound Drills described below are applicable for athletes in the Grade 3 to 6 range and though they may seem very simple there are three valuable aspects of coordination that will be developed through their correct execution...

BBC Hall of Fame Inductees
Basketball BC President Diana Chan is pleased to announce the inductees for the Class of 2012 into the BBC HOF. "This class represents some of the best of BC athletes, coaches, officials and teams and we look forward to celebrating their induction on April 21", said Chan. Tessa Beauchamp
Basketball BC is sad to announce that BBC athlete Tessa Beauchamp lost her battle to cancer. We send our condolences to the Beauchamp family and Tessa's many friends and teammates.

Moria bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the BC Sport Agnecy. She will be a great addition to the strong team that is being formed.

The February edition of the BC Sport Agency’s newsletter is available now. The BC Sport Agency is a new initiative which aims to provide strategic leadership for the advancement of sport in our province.

U13 Steve Nash Challenge
 
Basketball BC will be partnering with Special Olympics BC and BC Wheelchair Basketball for the 2012 U13 Steve Nash Challenge. The event will mark the first time Basketball BC has worked with Special Olympics and the second time working with BC Wheelchair Basketball. 
 

Basketball BC Visits Steve Nash Youth Basketball Program in Whistler
 
Basketball BC's Coaching Development Manager Mike McNeill spent a recent weekend providing a basketball clinic to coaches and athletes in Whistler. Alan Kristmanson, former member of the Canadian National's Men's basketball team, is coordinating the new program in Whistler. View a video featuring the program here. National Canadian Midget and Juvenile Championships 

The 2012 Canadian National Basketball Championships will be taking place for boys at the U15 and U17 levels from July 30 to August 6 in Sherbrooke, Quebec and for girls at the U15 and U17 levels from August 5 to 17 in Fredericton, New Brunswick. 


Elite Development Program

Elite Development Program information will be available in February. Stay tuned to Basketball BC's website for up to date information on all the Elite Development age group programs.


Western Canada Cadet Championships 

The Western Cadet Championships for U16 players will be held at the GO Centre in Edmonton, Alberta from August 1 to 5, 2012. This event and the U16 Provincial Team program are the key development components in preparation for the Canada Summer Games being held in Sherbrooke, Quebec in 2013. 


Call Out for Coaches
 
We are now in the final process of recruiting and selecting Zone Team and BC Summer Games coaches. If you are a motivated coach and want to take part in regional player development at the U14 and U15 levels for both boys and girls please contact Ross Tomlinson. For U14's, The BC Games will be held in Surrey from July 19 to 22.  
 

Special Olympics BC Coaches Receive NCCP Training 
 
NCCP Learning Facilitators, Shaun McGuinness and Mike McNeill, had a great weekend delivering the Competition-Introduction Basketball course to 29 enthusiastic Special Olympics BC coaches. In sessions held in Richmond and West Vancouver, The SOBC coaches gathered from around the province including Vernon, Campbell River, Langley, and the Lower Mainland. The coaches enjoyed both on floor and classroom sessions over the two-day course.
