Conditioning your dog to loud noises
Dateline July 3, 1989 : It was a beautiful summer’s day and I was looking forward to attending a friend’s wedding in the mountains not far outside of town. The day was very warm so when I departed for the wedding I left the windows open. After enjoying a wonderful evening in the cooler air of the mountains I returned home. Upon entering the house I knew something had gone terribly wrong. Darwin my Lab Chessie mix was cowering in the bathtub and Aquilla my Siberian Husky was no where to be found.
It seems I had forgotten that the 4 thof July was on Sunday so all of the fireworks were scheduled a day early. I searched through the house looking for Aquilla and discovered that she had broken through one of window screens in an attempt to get away from the loud noises. I searched until two in the morning but couldn’t find her. The next morning animal control called to inform me that they thought they had found Aquilla but they were unsure because this dog had been found six miles from my house. Thankfully it was indeed my dear friend Aquilla. Don’t let this happen to you or your dog, take steps now to habituate your dog to loud noises.
Every dog reacts differently to loud noises like fireworks or even thunder and there are many was that you can help alleviate the stress this causes in your dog. With the 4 thof July just around the corner now is a great time to start habituating your dog to loud noises. Please visit the training tips section of our website to learn ways you can help keep your safe and stress free during this year’s fireworks season.

Annual 5K
On behalf of RMLR, I would like to THANK everyone who was part of our 4th Annual 5K on Sunday, May 15th 2011 – The sponsors (special Thanks to our title sponsor, Banfield Pet Hospital), vendors, businesses that donated to our raffle, the runners that registered, the dogs that came along and highlighted what RMLR is all about, and, of course, our wonderful RMLR volunteers, friends & family!! We couldn’t have done it without you all! Despite the cold and the rain, we had a record number of people register and turn out for the event. It was perfect running weather for most.. just a little cold and wet for the vendors and volunteers! But that didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits and there were smiling faces all around. A huge Thank You to Dan Rieber, Jessica Price and Trent Lenz for taking lots of awesome photos of the event! You can see all the photos from the day at www.rieber.smugmug.com and these photos are available to purchase, with proceeds coming back to the dogs at RMLR.

Meet Zebulon- RMLR's Featured Dog
Meet , affectionately called “The Zebber” or “Zeb” by his foster family. This boy was named for the famous American explorer who discovered Pikes Peak, and true to his namesake, he is always ready for adventure, and has enough energy to conquer any mountain! Hiking, swimming, running, trips to the dog park, games of fetch (his FAVORITE!), and other active pursuits need to be regular activities for this pup!
Check out more information about Mickey and our other Labs for Adoption under Adoptable Dogs
