Dig Crew 2011 is in full swing

March marked the beginning of our 2011 Dig Crew program, welcoming 30 San Jose high schoolers to the Veggielution community.  The Dig Crew has adopted the Original Plot and will be transforming it into a backyard demonstration garden with their own garden plots, rows of strawberries, multi-colored potatoes, and seed saving projects.  Spring plants went into the ground last week and are happy to be out of the rain and in the sunshine.

In addition to gardening, after-school sessions include team building games, workshops, and a harvest bag with Veggielution produce and recipes.  So far, we have decided what kind of community we want to build, thought about the transformation of the Valley of Hearts Delight into Silicon Valley, visited the community garden Cornucopia, traced the path of a strawberry through different food systems, and learned important cooking and meal planning skills.  On Saturdays the youth will be working alongside volunteers, running the farm stand, and cooking for the potluck so be sure to stop by!

State of the farm

Even though its been raining, we've found ways to stay productive on limited workdays, potting up hundreds of tomatoes, eggplants and peppers, building tables for our greenhouse, painting signs and tidying up the farm. Now that the suns out, in the next 10 days, we'll be making a big push to get the back half of our acre ready for a whole lot of planting. Our commitment to using hand labor means that we'll be large groups out there shaping beds by hand, topdressing with compost donated by the City of San Jose, installing irrigation lines and finally transplanting and seeding.

But we know that our whole volunteer community is going to go nuts now that Spring is in the air, and we expect to see big groups of you at every workday from hear on out. So enjoy the weather, and see you at the farm! Read more here.

Volunteer of the month: Raffaella Cerruti

Raffaella Cerruti made her way from Italy to the U.S. for love, but little did she know that she would also fall for Veggielution Community Farm. Raffaella started volunteering her time with the farm last November and is currently our Administrative Intern. With a Phd in Agro-Food Economics, Raffaella is an absolute asset to our farm. She assists the farm with grant proposals, our business plan, the farm budget, and entering data. She also helps organize our monthly Family Day. Continue reading about Raffaella here.

Outreach and Education Coordinator

Welcome Yona, farewell Cody

We want to welcome on our new Outreach and Education Coordinator Yonara Acevedo! Yona will be facilitating Cooking Matters, our cooking and nutrition class offered in Spanish. She is also coordinating tabling events, community presentations, and free billingual workshops. Yona came to the U.S. from Colombia and has her degree in agro-business. She wants to spend her time at Veggielution sharing her knowledge and passion for farming, sustainable living, and healthy lifestyle through educational activities and community outreach.

While we are thrilled to have Yona on board, we also want to give our gratitude to Cody Kraatz our previous Outreach member.  Cody has poured many dedicated hours into structuring and implementing outreach for all of our incredible programs at the farm. We will miss his eye for detail, his way with words, and his knowledge of media. Thank you Cody for helping Veggielution grow!
