Verizon iPhone Now Available!
Should you Take the Leap?
Arguably one of the most wonderful electronic devices ever created - Apple's iPhone 4 - is now available on the most reliable cellular network ever created. Switching to Verizon from AT&T seems like a no-brainer, however there is more to this than meets the eye. If you are already on the Verizon network, and happen to be eligible for a reduced-price phone upgrade, then I can think of very few reasons not to properly dispose of your current phone and grab a shiny new iPhone. If you already have an iPhone with AT&T, don't switch just yet.
The Pros & Cons of Getting a
Verizon iPhone:
Pros for AT&T Subscribers Switching to Verizon:
* The Verizon network is far more reliable than AT&T, and you are far less likely to drop calls
* Verizon has a data plan that will allow you to use the iPhone as a Wi-Fi hotspot
Cons for AT&T Subscribers Switching to Verizon:
* You may have to pay rather large fees for terminating your agreement with AT&T
* You cannot talk on the phone and browse the web or perform other tasks that require downloading data at the same time (this is likely not a big deal for most people)
* 3G performance on Verizon is reportedly slower than AT&T, so this means web browsing and downloading emails, among other things, will be slower
* Verizon is reportedly "throttling" their data services to iPhone users to deal with the expected huge load on their network
* A new iPhone (mostly likely "iPhone 5") should be out by the end of this summer, and there is a possibility that this phone will operate on Verizon's faster "4G" network
Pros for Current Verizon Customers:
* Quality. I have looked at and held hundreds, if not thousands of phones and NOTHING out there compares to the iPhone. The face of the iPhone is made of the highest quality optical-grade glass, and the stainless steel band and buttons not only look good, but they resemble something you'd see in the cockpit of a modern fighter jet.
* Ease of use. You don't need an operating manual to use the iPhone. Seriously, it's that easy to set up and use.
* The screen is GORGEOUS. It may not be the biggest screen, but the 640x960 resolution makes text and images so beautiful, it's like looking at a polished magazine cover. I have yet to see a more beautiful screen on any device.
* Huge selection of polished, useful apps from the App Store.
* Reliable Exchange syncing (built in), and support for POP/IMAP accounts and open standards such as CalDAV and CardDAV
Cons for Current Verizon Customers:
* No 4G version of the iPhone yet and a newer model is likely to hit the market within 6 months
* If you currently have an Android device, you may be used to certain features that are unavailable on an iPhone such as built-in voice recognition. This allows you to use your voice to dictate text messages, emails, or get directions by simply speaking an address or point of interest right into the phone. Hopefully Apple will build speech to text features in the next iPhone, or into the next iOS.
* If you have an Android device, you tend to get more value from your data plan because there are 3rd-party apps that allow you to tether your phone to your computer for Internet access without paying monthly fees
