CBM's Prayerline

Democratic Republic of Congo

As many of you will have heard via the media, hostilities have recently resumed in the provinces of North and South Kivu.  As a result of fighting between the regular army and other factions, thousands of people have now fled from their villages with small children and without immediate help. One international humanitarian organization spoke of around 2 million displaced people in the two provinces since January this year.  Many in the affected areas have fled to remote places, where the local churches are now struggling to care for them.  Please pray - for the many who have fled in fear, for those who are doing their best to care for them in their difficulties, and for the humanitarian workers who are trying not to take sides while at the same time dialoging with authorities to initiate a workable strategy to deal with the situation in the best way possible.

Guardians of Hope

Today (May 15) is the International Day of Families, but for a large number across the globe - particularly children - HIV/AIDS has robbed them of not only their parents but other close family members as well.  As you think about celebrating with your own family, please spare a thought for those whose family has been decimated by this disease.  Pray for the children who have had to fill grown-up shoes while still of school age, and at the same time praise God for the women who have opened their homes to act as Guardians of Hope to those within their communities who have been affected.

Brazil

Joyce Hancock is praising God for staff members who have been stepping up to the plate when she isn’t around – something that has to happen in order for the work to carry on without her oversight when the time comes.  Pray that the staff will continue to grow in their willingness and ability to take on more responsibilities as Free Flight continues to expand its horizons, and pray too that the Lord will continue to meet the ever growing financial needs of this very effective ministry.

Kenya
Please pray for the most recent Global Field Staff personnel to arrive overseas - Randy and Elizabeth Legassie.  Having arrived safely in Kenya, they are currently settling into their new culture and surroundings.  Pray that their health will remain strong and that they will quickly become part of the CBM team, ready to serve Kenya and her people with energy and enthusiasm, modelling to them the grace and compassion of the God they love and serve.

Syria
With the humanitarian crisis in Syria escalating, our folks in neighbouring Lebanon are hearing from pastors about people of all faiths approaching them on a daily basis, asking for food and other basic necessities.  Please pray for CBM staff members as they begin to put in place a program to respond through local churches in Syria.  Pray for wisdom, much grace, open doors and opportunities as they plan this response which is a huge challenge logistically - and politically very sensitive.  Pray also for the protection of the churches and believers in Syria, and that Christians in Lebanon will respond in love and compassion to the needs of their neighbours.

Europe/Mediterranean
Pray for those working in difficult parts of the world, where in many cases secularism rules and Christianity is considered alien and unwelcome.  Pray for both workers from overseas and national believers who continue to experience religious persecution.  Ask God to keep them safe and protect them from the enemy of discouragement.  Just knowing that people are praying for them has an impact on their lives, bringing peace and building spiritual strength and confidence.

Project of the Month
At CBM, May means Mothers’ Day, means Solidarity Sunday, which, starting today is our project of the month.  This year we are focusing on women and children in India, where infant and maternal mortality rates are some of the highest in the world – particularly for those who are in remote tribal communities.  In response to their plight, CBM has helped to provide a new Mother and Child Care Clinic in Serango, Orissa, where young mothers and their children are offered vital medical care as well as health awareness and educational programs covering nutrition, family planning and the importance of clean drinking water.  As mothers learn how to improve the way they feed and care for their families, their children will experience a healthier start in life, and continue to grow stronger as they mature into adulthood.

Germany
As John and Ruth Chan settle in to their fourth year of ministry in Germany, it is becoming more and more difficult for them to personally take care of the increasing number of believers and seekers.  Not only do they believe that God has called them to be evangelists and teachers, nurturing those who He puts in their path, but they also believe that He wants them to mobilize all believers to use their spiritual gifts to serve and build up the church.  For this reason, their goal for 2012 is to train up strong lay leadership, teaching, equipping and empowering them to serve as ‘little shepherds’ to their small groups of ‘sheep.’

Bolivia
Rebecca Alward will be in Santa Cruz for the month of May, to start up and help with training for the teen ministry there.  Pray that the leadership will come together as a team and that it will be a productive and fruitful month.  Pray also for the leadership team in Tarija, who will carry the load while Rebecca is in Santa Cruz.

Congo
Sadly, the eastern Congo is known as the rape capital of the world, and the Muku area is one of the worst.  When Colin and Karen Godwin visited the area recently, they discovered that the Congolese Baptist Women’s Department has chosen Muku to begin a new support group there, and they were impressed with what they saw.  Not only do the members of the group visit the victims and listen with compassion to their stories, they offer economical help in the form of microcredit loans to enable them to start small businesses – designed to put them on their feet financially and help them reintegrate into communities which have often looked on them with disdain. We praise God for the prayers and financial support of Canadian Baptist Women who have responded to their plight through CBM.  Please pray for all these women – both helpers and those in need of help – that the Lord will bless them with the health and strength they need to persevere through the hurt and struggle.

China
Due to an unforeseen change in circumstances, an urgent need has recently arisen which means that CBM is looking to put together a team to go to Hubei, China, to take part in a summer camp.  There is a solid English language program using phonics, while at the same time cultivating an environment of self-discovery and expression through fun, interaction and life-shaping activities.  Please pray that God will speak to the hearts of those He knows would both enjoy and be an asset to such a team.

Middle East
Our partners in the Middle East could tell you a myriad of tragic refugee stories.  So many youngsters, the majority of whom are male, leave home, or even their country, at an early age to escape brutal treatment.  Many such souls end up as illegals, running drugs for those who promise them quick money and a better life.  Pray for these young people in their loneliness and vulnerability, and at the same time, thank God for those who treat them with compassion, respect and the love of Christ as they work diligently on their behalf to guide them back to a meaningful and satisfying lifestyle.

See spring 2012 issue of mosaic which features ministry among Palestinian refugees.
