AHIP is one of central Virginia’s oldest, most effective and most respected non-profit housing organizations.

Since 1976, we have worked to ensure safe and decent housing for our low-income neighbors. We have assisted more than 3,500 people—thousands of households from close-in city streets to far-flung rural hollows—with housing rehabilitations, emergency repairs, a variety of support services and affordable rental units.

Decent and affordable housing has a demonstrable impact on family stability and the life outcomes of children. Decent housing is an indispensable building block of healthy neighborhoods, and thus shapes the quality of community life….Better housing can lead to better outcomes for individuals, communities, and American society as a whole.

2002 MILLENNIAL HOUSING COMMISSION

Summer 2011

50 Year Wait... New Home and New Beginnings.

Each and every repair AHIP completes—no matter how small—is a triumph for our staff and our client families.

But there is something particularly satisfying about cutting the ribbon in front of a brand-new home, especially when the homeowner had been living without indoor plumbing for 50 years.

Bertha, age 79, and her family contacted AHIP last year to ask about installing indoor plumbing. But her old house, situated on property that had been in her family for four generations, needed a lot more than indoor plumbing. The most cost-effective solution was to tear it down and build anew.

The majority of funding came from Virginia state’s Indoor Plumbing Rehabilitation Program, which targets households without indoor plumbing and helps cover the cost of other rehab needs as well. The balance of support came from HUD HOME funds, an anonymous donor, in-kind contributors and volunteer crews.

On a very hot day in early June, Ann Mallek, Chair of the Albemarle Board of Supervisors, led a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Bertha’s new home with Bertha and family members, community volunteers, subcontractors, donors, local and state housing representatives and AHIP staff and crew members in attendance. Together, we celebrated a new start. Bertha was the centerpiece of the morning, joyfully and tearfully thanking AHIP for changing her life, fulfilling a dream and giving her and her family the blessing of a new home.
