Goodbye 2011, Hello 2012!
It's hard to believe that 2012 is already here... what a whirlwind 2011 was at the finca! We were lucky to ring in the New Year with a finca full of visitors, owners, and volunteers. We celebrated with a pot-luck dinner and a community bonfire underneath a clear, star-filled 'summer' sky.
It's amazing to look back on the year and to bear witness to the changes and progress made in our treetop rainforest community over the course of 2011. One of the biggest transformations began taking place last February, when we started our volunteer program here at FBV. Little did we know that the fledgling volunteer program would become such a huge contribution to our growing community in such a short amount of time. We have been so incredibly lucky to attract wonderful people from all walks of life to this program. Whether they were on a career break, had a few months off from university, or, were searching for a new and unique pathway in life, we somehow managed to find overly qualified, dependable, and inspiring people to join Team FBV on a temporary basis. (A few are even transitioning into establishing their lives and careers here on a full-time basis!) Each person has touched the finca in their own special way, many of them starting and nurturing new facets of our community. The success of the FBV Volunteer Program in the short year it has been operating stands as a testament to the laws of serendipity that always seem to guide our community's progression.
We wanted to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU to all of our volunteers from 2011. Your contributions, ideas, and energy have meant more to us than you could possibly know. We can only hope that each of you has taken home something equally as valuable as what you have left behind.

We anticipate that 2012 will be the best year yet at Finca Bellavista, and hope that the new year brings health, prosperity, and happiness to all of our friends across the globe. HAPPY 2012!

Summer's here!
And the critters are out and about... This sloth (photo courtesy of Joe Gagne) put on quite the show for a few of our visitors by the Mis Ojos treehouse. For those of you that think sloths are lazy, check out this video that proves otherwise!
Easter EGGStravaganza
It might only be January, but Semana Santa and Easter are just around the corner. Our 2nd Annual Easter EGGStravaganza is scheduled for April 8, and is sure to be a great time. We are planning a 'finca decathalon', a scavenger hunt, and a progressive brunch to all of FBV's treehouses. Let us know if you want to join in the fun! Send an email to erica@fincabellavista.net if you plan on participating.
Our Growing Greenhouse
Felo and the rest of the gardening crew has been at it again. The Vivero doubled in size (again) and now features a hydroponic lettuce garden!

Help out a good cause
The Dominical Lifeguards is Costa Rica's first professional beach lifeguard service in Costa Rica. Many visitors to the Southern Zone (and to Finca Bellavista) head to Dominical to enjoy the waves, the sun, and the fun vibes of this funky little beach town. Dominical has a notorious undertow, and has historically been one of the most dangerous beaches to swim at in Costa Rica. Before Dominical Lifeguards was established in 2006, there were 20 drownings a year in Dominical on average. To help continue a legacy of safety for the Dominical beach, check out dominicallifeguards.org to make a donation or help support one of their events.

*Finca Fresh*
Classic Pesto
Use it in omelettes, use it as a marinade, eat it on pasta or pizza. Basil pesto goes a long way and adds zing to everything!
1/2 - 3/4 pound of basil
1 cup olive oil
2-4 heads of garlic (depending on personal taste)
3/4 cup nuts (walnuts, pine nuts, or almonds work great)
Clean and sort basil, using only leaves for pesto. Chop basil, garlic, and nuts SEPARATELY in a food processor. In a bowl, blend all ingredients, and add oil slowly to form the pesto paste. Store in jars, ice cube trays, or plastic baggies in a freezer.
