What's Happening...
Reverend Mark Morrison-Reed January 22...
On January 22nd, Reverend Mark Morrison-Reed will be the guest pulpit speaker during both church services. Ordained in 1979, Reverend Mark, became the 18th black person to receive a ministerial fellowship in the history of the UUA or its predecessor denominations; he was also the 2nd Afro-American raised as a UU to become a UU minister. His sermon's focus is on Unitarian Universalism re-articulated for the 21st century.
Your family is invited to attend the afternoon luncheon and discussion with Reverend Mark. The luncheon begins at 12:45 and the discussion begins at 1:30. During the discussion the Reverend will discuss: What is it like to grow up an African-American UU? Why does UUism find becoming more diverse such a struggle?
Please email me at youth@obuuc.org if you plan on attending the luncheon.
January 29 and February 5...
On January 29th Tony Larsen will be teaching the high school kids about Humanism in preparation for the Darwin's Birthday church service on February 5th. Please make sure your teen arrives at the annex at 6:30 on January 29th, so Tony has the entire two hours.
As I mentioned, February 5th are the Darwin's Birthday church services. Your teen is expected to assist Tony during either or both services. I'll contact you closer to that date to let you know which service your teen chose to attend.
What is Humanism?
Humanism is an approach in study, philosophy, world view or practice that focuses on human values and concerns. In other words it is an outlook or system of thought attaching prime importance to human rather than divine or supernatural matters.
Secular humanism is a secular ideology which espouses reason, ethics, and justice, whilst specifically rejecting supernatural and religious dogma as a basis of morality and decision-making. Secular humanism contrasts with religious humanism, which is an integration of humanist ethical philosophy with religious rituals and beliefs that center on human needs, interests, and abilities.
