Community Events

Kiss Dust Pictures Inc. with the participation of Telefilm Canada presents:

Two Indians Talking

a humorous First Nations drama leading to a roadblock near you
a film by Sara McIntyre
Vancouver BC – “Two Indians Talking” is a humorous, uncensored conversation between two First Nation men who are about to take part in their community’s roadblock. Each man wants fiercely to do the right thing, but struggles with the question, “When you do something for the right reasons, does that make it the right thing to do?”
ADAM (Justin Rain) is a university-educated Native of the Seventh Generation, raised to believe that knowledge is the Indian’s best tool for survival. NATHAN (Nathaniel Arcand) is a high-school dropout whose dreams have been consistently crushed in his endurance of the past 20 years.
On the eve of their nation’s roadblock, the cousins prepare for the impending battle in a community centre that they paint with heartfelt conversation and humorous debate about life, culture, identity, women, literature, dreams, politics, education, poverty, and about hope for the future – if any.
-       Directed by Sara McIntyre, a woman from Vancouver, BC
-       Starring an all-First Nations cast: Nathaniel Arcand, Justin Rain, Carmen Moore, Denyc, Sam Bob, and Ashley Harry
-       One of the least-explored film genres: the First Nations comedy
“The issues that we deal with are universal to Aboriginals: poor reserves and how living there affects Natives psychologically,” says Sto:lo/Ojibway writer Andrew Genaille.

SHIFT: dialogues of migration in contemporary art

A three-day creative symposium

April 8-10, 2011, Regina, SK
Organized by the Strandline Curatorial Collective and the MacKenzie Art Gallery

Location: MacKenzie Art Gallery
3475 Albert Street, Regina, Saskatchewan

www.shiftsymposium.ca

Feature Artist: Jayce Salloum
Keynote Speaker: Esther Shalev-Gerz
Keynote Performer: Eekwol

Day 1: Finding New Directions—Participatory Practices, Galleries and Groups
Day 2: Creating Common Ground—Cultural Translation, Trust and Language Crossings
Day 3:Positioning—Local and Global Narratives, Storytelling and Making Connections

SHIFT: dialogues of migration in contemporary art investigates creative responses by artists and galleries to the shifting geographies created by indigenous and non-indigenous movements of people and ideas.  Reflecting on current debates about mobility, migration, placements and displacements in contemporary art and institutions, this three-day event provides a platform to discuss progress and issues in this field.  Artists, curators, theorists, storytellers, musicians, educators, writers and the audience are invited to question and rethink the role of contemporary art in its transformative function.

While the first day draws on notable arts professionals and artists who have foregrounded and validated participation and engagement with diverse communities, the second day focuses on new artist practices with talks and performances on cultural translation.  The third day will be devoted to storytelling and narrative, mobility, connectivity and collaboration with communities.  Theories and best practices come hand-in-hand to provide a significant and radical overview of the subject.  Prior to and during the symposium, a series of events will also take place across the city, including artist talks, exhibition openings, art performances and film screenings.

On Friday April 8th, the symposium will begin with a feature presentation entitled subjective affinities: concretizing the ephemeral - a social convergence by Feature Artist Jayce Salloum (Vancouver).  On Saturday April 9th, Keynote Speaker Esther Shalev-Gerz (Paris) will present Trust and the Unfolding Dialogue, followed by a Keynote Performance Revitalizing and Redesigning the Word Warrior's Weapons by Cree hip hop emcee Eekwol (Saskatoon).

Featuring presentations and performances by: Brendan Fernandes, (Artist, New York); Janna Graham (Projects Curator at the Serpentine Gallery, London, UK); 2Fik  (Artist, Montreal); Syrus Marcus Ware (Program Coordinator, Teens Behind the Scenes program, AGO, Toronto); Terrance Houle (Artist, Calgary); Cheryl L’Hirondelle (Artist, Toronto); Peter Morin (Artist, Victoria); Rachelle Viader Knowles (Artist, Regina); and Shelly Bahl (Artist, founding member of SAVAC (South Asian Visual Arts Centre) and ZEN-MIX 2000: Pan-Asian Visual Arts Network, New York); Judy Anderson (Artist, Regina); Deanna Bowen (Artist, Toronto); Barbara Meneley (Artist, Regina); Soheila Esfahani (Artist, Waterloo); Michelle LaVallee (Artist & Assistant Curator, MacKenzie Art Gallery, Regina); Neal McLeod (Art Historian and artist, Trent University, Peterborough); Srimoyee Mitra (Artist. ANDPVA presents:
N-nsidiswaamdis: I Recognize Myself
curated by Crystal Migwans
Organized and circulated by the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation

April 2, 2011 - April 26, 2011
Opening Reception: Thursday, April 7th, 2011   7 pm - 9 pm
@ Gladstone Hotel, 3rd and 4th Floor Galleries

"This exhibition brings together the work of self-portraiture by artists from across the Anishinaabeg Nation. The works describe how Anishinaabe identity is forged, guarded and carried on by our Nation 's artists, and they demonstrate how the self-portrait in this context can become a potent statement of resilience; a reclaiming of agency of representation.
The title of this show is "N-nisidwaamdis: I Recognize Myself," a title which implies that there is a "someone" for whom this moment of recognition happens. In its [original] venue here in the gallery of the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation, on M'Chigeeng First Nations on Manitoulin Island, this exhbibition is addressed firstly to the eyes of our Anishinaabeg community here on Manitoulin. It is their viewership that the greatest part of the exhibition occurs. For from that perspective, we gaze upon the artworks before us, and the artists of the wider Anishinaabeg Nation gaze back. And we recognize ourselves."
- Crystal Migwans. Curator, from the catalogue "N-nisidwaamdis: I Recognize Myself"
Artists include Daphne Odjig, Arthur Shilling, Travis Shilling, Bewabon Shilling, Nadia Myre, Barry Ace and KC Adams.
Crystal Migwans is Curatorial Research Assistant at the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation, where she organizes shows of Anishinaabe art, designs museum exhibitions, and assists with the research and design of the OCF’s cultural and educational materials. She has a background in New Media Art and sculpture, and is a graduate of the Intermedia/Cyberarts program at Concordia University.  Crystal is an Anishinaabekwe of Wikwemikong First Nation.

Ask Arty

If you have an arts question that needs to be answered, send it to executive.andpva@gmail.com

Question?
How can I protect my videos and films if I'm an individual artist? How can I distribute my work safely?

Question answered by www.Vtape.org

Vtape is an international distribution, exhibition and resource centre with an emphasis on the contemporary media arts. As a centre for over 900 artists artists, V tape carries over 5,000 titles. V tape's in-office facilities include several study carrels for viewing and an extensive library of print materials available to the general public as well as to students, curators and researchers.

Answer:

Try to work with a distributor - they do a lot in terms of getting your work out to simultaneous festival dates, educators and programmers and protect it from unauthorized screenings or copying at the same time. If it is at all possible, watermark your preview dvd copies.

When entering festivals - I advise artists to compose and send an email to festivals they are interested in, with - an intro including brief bio, followed by title, year, running time and synopsis or tape description. Include a strong image (electronic still) in the body of the email - make sure it's not too large.  Ask if the festival is interested in receiving a preview and if they will waive the entry fee (many international festivals, ie: anything outside of Canada are seeking international entries and will waive the fee).

Read the submissions guidelines very carefully. Currently festivals are attempting to work in all kinds of additional rights, including keeping submaster/exhibition copies (never, never agree to this!) and permission to tour and/or stream on-line.
In the case of promotion - short clips should only be used.

Avoid streaming requests and webcasts unless you have made the work expressly for this purpose (ie: a commissioned work) and you have exhausted all other screening possibilities. Streaming on-line immediately disqualifies your title for other festivals and broadcast.

You can load your titles to VIMEO - a great site where you can password protect your files and still allow on-line preview for festivals or programmers. The quality is great and you have much more control than Youtube offers.
