From Leslie McCue- Executive Assistant

Aaniin andpva members!

I'm really excited to be a part of the Female Eye Filmmaker Development Workshops. Six Aboriginal women filmmakers
signed up to participate in this unique opportunity: Tanis Desjarlais, Sarah Nanibush, EvaRose Tabobondung,Alana Brascoupe,
Deandra Wells and myself, Leslie McCue.  Andpva has partnered with Female Eye Film Festival to train six young Aboriginal
women in Super 8mm film making. Each emerging filmmaker was paired with a mentor and a peer as we work from conception,
shoot, to a fully realized short film. The mentors are: Jules Koostachin, Amanda Strong, Peggy Anne Berton and Leslie Ann Coles.

We all had one day to shoot and direct our film with our mentor anywhere in the city. All of our workshops have been at LIFT
(Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto, an excellent resource for filmmakers.)The camera workshop and production days will be followed
by an editing workshop, and we each have two sessions in which to cut our negs and complete our short films.

The short films will premiere at the 9th Annual Female Eye Film Festival (FeFF) in Toronto, March 16th @ The WARC Gallery
401 Richmond Street West, Toronto Ontario

Come out and support us at the festival!!!

ANDPVA EVENTS

The RED Revue
(This month, February 25th, 8pm)

Andpva has begun a monthly arts event where we can hear and see each others work, hang out and maybe begin collaborating.
The RED Revue finds its inspiration in events that uncover the poetic aspect of life led by experimentation on stage. It also follows
the diversity of artistic practice of vaudeville where theatre, music, literature, comedy, performance art, poetry and film shared the
stage.  Indigenous ideas of building community around creativity and creating avenues for transforming culture are what drive
The RED Revue.

The RED Revue will take place on the fourth Friday of every month starting January 2011.  We will hire one headline Band to shake,
rattle and roll the audience into the late night. In addition, any Indigenous artist from any art form can sign up for the open mic. Feel
free to stage a new work, a work in progress or old standards. The point is to experiment, to have fun and to test your stuff on a new
audience. Lets all come together and share in this great imagining, called Indigenous arts. Come and keep dancing our revolution.

Our first event was held on January 28 at Dave's...on St. Clair. The Pappy John's Band gave their incredible passion and talent to our
group that chilly night.

The Open arts mic showcased a number of talents including: Shandra Spears-Bombay, Spencer Brigham, Shallen Murray,
David West, Lena Recollet and Rosary Spence. We were lucky to have Glenn Gould host the evening.

Will you be attending this months RED Revue?

When?
February 25th, 2011 at 8pm
Where? The Monarch Tavern, 12 Clinton Ave, South of College (in Little Italy) Toronto

Featuring: Jacques and the Shakey Boys!!!!

How to Drown a Fish

How to drown a fish
A new series of paintings by Travis Shilling
Opening Thursday February 10 -March 26, 2011
Gladstone Hotel (1214 Queen St. W.)

ANDPVA presents a new series by Travis Shilling on the third and fourth floors of the Gladstone hotel.
Join us this Thursday evening to meet the artist, listen to music and see an exciting new series
presented for the first time in Toronto.

Travis Shilling could almost be called a paint chronicler. He captures the hidden in the visible––aftereffects
and fallouts from events real and imagined. Shilling’s series How to drown a fish, marks out territories of
disaster and survival. Asking how one drowns a fish is asking the impossible because human and animal
alike always adapt to inner and outer hardship. Still, people try to drown a fish everyday, through damaging
the environment or self-destruction. A filmmaker and playwright, Travis' work reflects a rich insight and
exceptional skill.

The 9th Annual Aboriginal Youth Conference: Gathering Our Voices 2011

The ninth annual Aboriginal Youth Conference will attract up to 1500 Aboriginal youth from across both the
Province of BC and Canada. This year our chosen theme "A Vision of Our Future" will focus on areas that have been
identified as especially relevent to Aboriginal youth,
including Health, Language, Culture, Employment, Education and Lifelong Learning, and the Environment. These
important themes will be reflected in 40+ workshops, a 40-booth Career and Education Fair, Cultural and
Recreational Activities, Evening Events and Motivational Speakers.

The Aboriginal Youth Conference will provide up to 1,500 delegates with networking and leadership development
opportunities, best practices strategies, tools and techniques, and culturally appropriate teachings over four days.
Youth can gather, share and learn from each other and from mentors. This is an excellent opportunity to promote

ASK ARTY

If you have any art based questions for Arty, feel free to send them in. Send an email to executive.andpva@gmail.com
with all your art questions, we will find the right person to solve you questions! In the e-mail please note if you would like
it posted under your name or anonymously

Q. How do I get my art work seen by audiences?

A. The best way to get your art work seen by audiences is to submit an exhibition proposal to public art
galleries and artist run centres (arc’s).I would start by researching galleries and ARC’s that show work that
is similar to yours. Read the galleries mandate and decide if your work fits their mandate. An exhibition proposal
includes the following information: a cover letter, an artist statement, a CV, an exhibition proposal, an image list,
and images of your work. Your cover letter should show that you know about their gallery and mandate. Explain
why you would like to show there and how you fit the mandate. An artist statement gives the curator a picture of who
you are as an artist. Talk about your influences and who could be compared to. Make the curator feel your commitment
and what drives you to make the work you do.  There is a lot of discussion these days about whether you have to sound
like an academic and use a lot of critical theory in your language.  I believe honesty is best. If conceptualizing your work
comes out in a theoretical language then use it but, if not, do not try and fake it. Really ask yourself why your work matters
to you and build your ideas from there.  If you start from your materials then talk about that. If you start with a concept,
problem, or questions then talk about that. Always get someone who does not know your work to read it over to see if it is
easy to understand. The exhibition proposal outlines what specific work you want to show and should have an overarching
reason for grouping them together.  Include the images and image list for the works you want to exhibit but also include older
works. I would probably send a maximum of 10 images.  Your CV should list everywhere you have exhibited or studied. Make
your CV specific to your life as an artist. Do not include a work history that is unrelated to art.
