From Wanda Nanibush, Executive Director
Aniin community and friends,
I am happy to begin a growing period with ANDPVA. Committing my energy, mind and spirit to an organization
that supports artists and the cultural imagination of all of our People’s is the easy part. Devoting myself to listening
to artists and elders and translating their knowledge into policy changes, new services/programming and increased
relevancy is much harder. This is my path. I have worked in the arts for a number of years but I came to it as a
child who needed art to make sense of my changing world, all its pain and its beauty. Art was my refuge and my
challenger. Art offered no easy answers only better questions, which lead me to challenge our leadership, to challenge
my own assumptions about who I am as a woman, as an Anishinabe-kwe, and child of colonialism. Artists became my
historians, politicians, therapists, activists, and cultural insurgents. I grew up to fight hard for art and artists place in our
present moment where economics drives policy, consumerism drives social interaction, and community is a closed door
to all that is different or unknown. ANDPVA has a large role to play in the ecology of arts in this country now called
Canada and within Indigenous communities whose worldviews place creativity, transformation and mystery at its heart.
I hope to assist us in being a relevant, vibrant and active part in this ecology.

How to Drown a Fish
How to drown a fish
A new series of paintings by Travis Shilling
Opening Thursday February 10 (7 - 9 pm) - March 26, 2011
Gladstone Hotel (1214 Queen St. W.)
ANDPVA presents a new series by Travis Shilling on the third and fourth floors of the Gladstone hotel.
Join us this Thursday evening to meet the artist, listen to music and see an exciting new series
presented for the first time in Toronto.
Travis Shilling could almost be called a paint chronicler. He captures the hidden in the visible––aftereffects
and fallouts from events real and imagined. Shilling’s series How to drown a fish, marks out territories of
disaster and survival. Asking how one drowns a fish is asking the impossible because human and animal
alike always adapt to inner and outer hardship. Still, people try to drown a fish everyday, through damaging
the environment or self-destruction. A filmmaker and playwright, Travis' work reflects a rich insight and
exceptional skill. www.travisshilling.com

The RED Revue
Andpva has begun a monthly arts event where we can hear and see each others work, hang out and maybe begin collaborating.
The RED Revue finds its inspiration in events that uncover the poetic aspect of life led by experimentation on stage. It also follows
the diversity of artistic practice of vaudeville where theatre, music, literature, comedy, performance art, poetry and film shared the
stage. Indigenous ideas of building community around creativity and creating avenues for transforming culture are what drive
The RED Revue.
The RED Revue will take place on the fourth Friday of every month starting January 2011. We will hire one headline Band to shake,
rattle and roll the audience into the late night. In addition, any Indigenous artist from any art form can sign up for the open mic. Feel
free to stage a new work, a work in progress or old standards. The point is to experiment, to have fun and to test your stuff on a new
audience. Lets all come together and share in this great imagining, called Indigenous arts. Come and keep dancing our revolution.
Our first event was held on January 28 at Dave's...on St. Clair. The Pappy John's Band gave their incredible passion and talent to our
group that chilly night. (Add us on Facebook to view videos from the event)

N-nisidwaamdis: I Recognize Myself
curated by
Crystal Migwans, Ojibwe Cultural Foundation
@ WAHC 51 Stuart St. Hamilton
January 14th - March 31st 2011
"Barry Ace, Nanabush Was NowHere 2005 Acrylic on Canvas 64''x 66'' Private Collection
"This exhibition brings together the work of self-portraiture by artists from across the Anishinaabeg Nation.
The works describe how Anishinaabe identity is forged,
guarded and carried on by our Nation ’s artists, and they demonstrate how the self-portrait in this context can become a potent
statement of resilience; a reclaiming of agency of representation.
The title of this show is
"N-nisidwaamdis: I Recognize Myself," a title which implies that there is a "someone" for whom this
moment of recognition happens. In its [original] venue here in the gallery of the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation, on M'Chigeeng
First Nations on Manitoulin Island, this exhbibition is addressed firstly to the eyes of our Anishinaabeg community here on
Manitoulin. It is their viewership that the greatest part of the exhibition occurs. For from that perspective, we gaze upon the
artworks before us, and the artists of the wider Anishinaabeg Nation gaze back. And we recognize ourselves."
- Crystal Migwans. Curator, from the catalogue "N-nisidwaamdis: I Recognize Myself"
The Workers Arts & Heritage Centre is pleased to host this exciting exhibition which brings together the work of some of
Canada's most important aboriginal artists including: Norval Morrisseau, Carl Beam, Daphne Odjig, Arthur Shilling,
Travis Shilling, Bewabon Shilling, Nadia Myre, Barry Ace and KC Adams.

If you have any art based questions for Arty, feel free to send them in. Send an email to executive.andpva@gmail.com
with all your art questions, we will find the right person to solve you questions! In the e-mail please note if you would like
it posted under your name or anonymously
This is from Ottawa-based singer/songwriter Chris Herodier
1. If I recorded with someone who does not have a label and is independent, would I have to create a
label once they’ve done their job of recording and mastering to market my cd?
It's not necessary or required by anyone or anything to create a label to market your CD. You can create a CD without
having a label to do it, many artists do just that including the band I'm in. However,
I think you get more serious attention if you do have your own label: As in critics and publications are more open to
receiving your CD for review if you have a label attached to your name. Plus, some avenues for financing may be more
open to you if potential lenders see that you have a label AND a marketing plan. Having a label tells them that you are
organized in the way you are financially approaching your business, which is the record business.
2. What if they (the producer and/or arranger) do some of the creating, as in composing in how the song will
sound, as in guitar work or keyboard. Can they claim something like royalties with that, as I created the original
melody for the song, but guitar is only an extension of that?
First off, understand that royalties are totally negotiable with whoever is working on your album, but royalties aren't
usually given to an arranger who strictly does the arrangements, this is generally a flat fee for services kind of deal.
However, producers often get a royalty, plus fee for services. Although low budget independent producers often don't
charge a royalty, just the straight up producing fee. Again this is all negotiable. Big time producers most definitely get
a cut of the profits. Session players generally don't get royalties either, generally it's just a fee for services kind of deal
as well, but, these can be negotiated in order to get royalties for the session players. It doesn't happen too often,
but it can, particularly in cases where the session players don't get paid for the actual session and will get paid from CD
sales.
3. Is their job done with their payment, if they're the producer?
Typically yes. The producer is generally responsible for getting a recorded performance (tracking, overdubbing ,
mixing, rehearsing, arranging, contracting musicians, song selection, etc.) and a pre-master mix to the mastering
studio and then approving the master once it comes back from the mastering studio. Marketing the album is the
job of the artist or label. The Producer works in the creative and musical aspects of the album.... although, sometimes
the producer does assist in marketing and promotion IF he has some sort of expertise in this area or if using his name
as part of the marketing tools will assist in the album's promotion. Having the producer
assist in marketing and promotion is a negotiable item, but you can't expect a producer to work in these areas.
The producer's fee will definitely have to be adjusted upwards in those cases where the producer works in marketing
and promotion.
4. Can the studio, for example, claim the rights to my music, as it is the studio that recorded my music,
or do I have to make sure that an agreement is made prior to recording with you that the rights are all mine
including royalties?
Typically, a studio can legally hold on to the master until full payment has been received for work done. Once full
payment is made then the studio has no legal claim to the recording and can not claim royalties. Recording studios
work on a fee-for -service basis. However, if you don't pay in full then studios can and will hold on to the masters
until the recording has been paid for.
5. Do I have to register with Ontario to market my music worldwide?
No, I know people in ontario who are doing just that: Marketing their own songs out of their own home via the
web without registering with any official agency at all. Although you should keep track of your earnings via
receipts, etc. in case the tax people come after you....but due to Status tax exemption this can be a gray area,
best to get an accountant or lawyer who specializes in Aboriginal tax law to assist you there.
