WE ALL ROCKED @ THE ROCK HOP!!
Haun’s 2012 Rock Hop was a huge success!! It was wonderful seeing our kids dancing and enjoying themselves and so many of our Haun families having such fun together. Our games, raffles and silent auctions were very successful for the Haun community. Thanks to all the parents, teachers and staff members who contributed to this worthwhile cause. As you know, pulling off an event like the Rock Hop takes many, many volunteers working together as a team. Whether you helped plan the event, set up, cleaned up, worked a shift during the Hop or just came to enjoy the fun, we thank you.
We are especially grateful to our dedicated Rock Hop Committee Chairs who worked tirelessly to make this fun for all of us: Vandana Aggarwal and Tiffanny Hosey (Decorations), Kathy Phillips (Volunteers), Mary Gaetjen and Trish Sujack (Publicity), Debbie Martin and Tia Sukenik (Food), Stacy Koch and Liz Nangle (Grade-Level Baskets), Becky Grant and Trisha Brightup (Silent Auctions), Susan Clare and Michelle Culberson (Games), Lisa Bruno (Cake Walk) and Marlene Aldridge and Denise Erich (Tickets). A special thank you to Sarah Morris and This Side UP! for the donation of the popcorn!! Many thanks to our PTA President, Tiffanny Hosey, who was always available to bounce ideas off of and help in any way needed. We would also like to thank the 3rd and 4th grade teachers for graciously sharing their classrooms with us so we could have games in the classrooms!! Finally, we want to give a special thank you to Jayne Smith and all of our Haun teachers and staff for their support. The Rock Hop would have never happened without you!!

TEXAS PTA LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP RECIPIENTS FOR 2011-2012
Every year the Haun PTA chooses three or four Lifetime Membership recipients. This year, the PTA will honor Denise Erich, Martha Karren, Tia Sukenik and Haun teacher, Melissa Perez. Each of these recipients gives their time, energy, creativity and so much more to our school. They help make Haun the amazing school it is. We are so very fortunate to have these ladies in our community and involved with our children.
The next time you see any of these ladies at Haun, please thank them for everything they do!!
HAUN WINS CREST AGAIN!!
We are proud to announce that our counselor, Marjorie Edge, has once again won the prestigious CREST award. CREST stands for Counselors Reinforcing Excellence for Students in Texas. Schools receiving CREST awards have demonstrated a commitment using the school guidance and counseling program to improve the lives and achievement of students in academic, career and personal social domains. Only FIVE PISD schools won the CREST award this year.
All of our Haun Huskies are touched by the heart, spirit and pride of our counselor. She leaves a paw print on each of us by encouraging us to grow and learn while showing kindness and respect toward one another. Mrs. Edge is truly changing the future by:
-
serving on our CMIT (Campus Monitoring and Intervention Team) and SBIC (School Based Improvement Committee);
-
developing/facilitating our violence prevention plan, school citizenship program and R Time curriculum;
-
leading the staff and students during College Week, Red Ribbon Week and Friendship Week activities;
-
empowering students through guidance lessons and academic support times;
-
promoting community awareness through our community partnerships; and
-
supporting Haun’s vision of creating a learning environment that shows kindness, shares joy and celebrates a love for learning.
Congratulations to Mrs. Edge for such a prestigious award that is well deserved. We love you!!
STAAR--STATE OF TEXAS ASSESSMENT OF ACADEMIC READINESS
TAKS testing for 3rd through 5th grade is being replaced this spring by STAAR tests. STAAR was developed to increase the rigor of our state assessment so our children will be better able to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
STAAR will assess our students at a greater depth and higher level of complexity. Math, reading and writing tests will address only the TEKS taught in the students’ current year of study. The science assessment will utilize curriculum from 3rd-5th grades. Writing assessments for 4th grade have been extended to two days (one day for a personal narrative and one for an expository essay). Reading tests will focus more on critical analysis and evaluation rather than literal understanding. The math section of STAAR will have more open-ended questions allowing students to independently solve the problems without answer choices.
Unlike TAKS, an untimed test, STAAR will have a time limit of four hours. All breaks are included within the time limit. Students will have a forty-five minute lunch period that is not included in the four-hour window.
Performance standards will not be in place this spring. This year, we will only receive raw scores on our students and sometime next year we should have a predictor score as to whether or not they would have passed. This year, passing to the next grade level will be determined by report card grades.
At Haun, our goal is to prepare the children for this new assessment without placing any additional stress on them. As always providing them with the best education is our priority. We are sure Haun will remain an Exemplary campus for 2012-2013.
Dates for the STAAR tests include:
* March 27th - 4th Writing and 5th Math
* March 28th - 4th Writing and 5th Reading
* April 24th - 3rd and 4th Math
* April 25th - 3rd and 4th Reading
* April 26th - 5th Science

HELPFUL HINTS FROM HAUN'S KITCHEN!!
Help your child make smart, healthy eating choices by going over the school menu with them before school. We have an awful lot of waste and we would love to see the kids eat more and toss less.

-
view daily spending reports and cafeteria purchases;
-
restrict purchases of snacks or extra entrees;
