2012 State of Black America

The National Urban League is set to release the 2012 State of Black America (SOBA) report in Cramton Auditorium on the campus of historic Howard University on March 7, 2012, launching a yearlong campaign, “Occupy the Vote to Educate, Employ & Empower” at a monumental Town Hall Event.
The 2012 State of Black America report includes the Equality Index providing a statistical diagnosis of the status of Blacks, Hispanics, and Whites as well as essays by a host of political, business, and community leaders including Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, President and CEO of the National Urban League, Marc H. Morial, singerJohn Legend, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, entrepreneur and author Steve Stoute, and a host of others with prescriptions for the employment and education crisis facing the nation. With new voter ID laws and voting rights under attack, the 2012 State of Black America will inspire you to “Occupy the Vote” in this important election year.
FREE and open to the public, the Town Hall Event will feature community and thought leaders, a coalition of Civil Rights organizations, and YOU, as we “Occupy the Vote to Educate, Employ, and Empower!”

"Keys to the League" New Member Orientation

2012 Voter Registration Drive

In an effort to ensure District of Columbia and Maryland residents are registered to vote, Thursday Network will assist residents in renewing, re-certifying and registering with their respective districts. The Social Action/Civic Engagement Committee will target those groups who are statistically under-represented in voter activity. To increase awareness about public policies affecting residents, we are hosting non-partisan voter registration drives throughout the Greater Washington DC area for election cycles throughout the year.
We are currently recruiting teams to help kick-off the voter registration drives on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at the Robert Walker Senior Citizens Complex and Sunrise Senior Living Center, and on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at Prince George's Community College.

National Day of Service: STEM Works!

Each year the National Urban League Young Professionals (NULYP) chapters collectively participate in community service on the same day to show the nation that young professionals DO give back to our communities. This day is known as the National Day of Service. This year's theme for National Day of Service is STEM Works! Thursday Network will participate in STEM Works at the Greater Washington Urban League (GWUL) headquarters from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Our goal is to get bright young students, especially from underrepresented groups, excited about Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) studies, and encourage these students to consider careers in STEM fields.
We are seeking volunteers who work in a STEM field to help demonstrate the various academic and professional possibilities with a background in STEM disciplines.

Young Blacks Give Back (YBGB) Campaign

Join Thursday Network for our annual Young Blacks Give Back(YBGB)campaign! Recognized by a District of Columbia mayoral proclamation as an outstanding and noteworthy civic achievement, YBGB is celebrating 18 years of providing innovative and engaging service opportunities for young professionals in the Greater Washington community.
This year, Thursday Network is partnering with the District of Columbia Public Library Free Computer Class Program at Martin Luther King Jr. Library. This program offers free computer classes to adults and Thursday Network members are needed to help the attendees learn how to use basic computer programs such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel programs. On Saturday May 19th there will be three shifts from which you can choose to volunteer (10:00 – 12:00, 12:15 – 2:15, and 2:30 – 4:30).
All volunteers will need to attend a mandatory orientation prior to the service event and must register for the event by March 21, 2012.
