Dear <<First Name>>
Why are Science Fairs Important?

Science Fairs provide excellent afterschool educational experiences where students gain knowledge, confidence and skills to help them compete in a global workforce.

“Science fairs develop skills that reach down to everybody’s lives, whether you want to be a scientist or not,” says Michele Glidden, a director at Society for Science & the Public, a nonprofit group that administers 350 regional fairs whose winners attend Intel’s International Science and Engineering Fair, the world’s largest high school competition. “The point is to breed science-minded citizens.”

Students who complete science fair projects learn how knowledge is created and communicated with science.

What are science fair experiences like for students? To answer this question, WHY SCIENCE is sharing science fair achievement stories written by students with you.

In other news at Why Science,  Ease The Quiet Storm film screening followed by a Town Hall Q&A concerning the CT Achievment Gap continues in Hamden on May 23.  This is the last town hall in this particular series. We do hope you join us for this engaging evening event.

Adventures with Newton's Laws-A Story by Jameson Kief

I chose my science fair project because two years earlier I did a project on levers and while I was researching levers on the computer, I saw a list of simple machines. In the list I found pulleys. I kept that in my mind as I saw pulleys all around me. I saw them on cranes on the side of the road and in weight machines. I also heard that pulleys had been used to construct some of the greatest architectural feats, like the Parthenon in Athens, Greece.

I wanted to test if this was true ...Click Here to Read Full Article

Greener World-A Story by Sean Hackett

For my science fair project, I studied the effect of salt on the amount of hydrogen produced by the electrolysis of water.  I chose this project because I have always been interested in making the world a greener place and in creating more efficient ways to protect and preserve the environment.  For example, I have played an active and important role in the recycling program in my town.  When I was in the third grade, I took note of the numerous reusable materials that were being thrown out instead of recycled at my elementary school ...  Click Here to Read Full Article
